Svmuu News Blockstream CEO Adam Back stated in an interview with Bloomberg that quantum computers currently do not pose an immediate threat to the Bitcoin network, but the industry should begin preparations now. He pointed out that current hardware generally lacks error correction capabilities, and the quantum risk is a long-term challenge rather than a near-term crisis.
Adam Back emphasized that the core issue is not about reaching a consensus on when quantum computers will become sufficiently threatening, but about providing Bitcoin holders with an approximately ten-year window to migrate their keys to a quantum-resistant format. He mentioned that a research team of 20 people is already continuously working on related efforts, publishing papers and conducting practical deployments. Blockstream's Liquid network is already being used as an early testing platform.
Furthermore, post-quantum cryptography has moved from the theoretical stage to the implementation stage, with NIST finalizing the relevant standards by the end of 2024. The main challenge facing the industry is how to coordinate an orderly migration before the risk becomes imminent.
