Svmuu News: The South Korean government plans to invest approximately 4 trillion won next year to procure 10,000 units of NVIDIA’s latest GPU, the Vera Rubin, to support the expansion of public-facing services such as “AI for All” and the development of national-level AI infrastructure.
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT plans to extend the “Project to Strengthen the Foundation for AI Computing Resource Utilization” and will ensure that all GPUs introduced next year are Vera Rubin models. Under this project, private-sector companies—such as cloud service providers operating data centers—are responsible for the entire process of GPU procurement, deployment, and maintenance, with funding provided through the government budget.
Over the past two years, the South Korean government has secured a cumulative total of more than 30,000 GPUs through this project and other initiatives, providing them to both the public and private sectors. Compared to the previous-generation Blackwell architecture, the Vera Rubin offers up to a 6-fold increase in training performance and more than an 8-fold increase in inference performance. A representative from South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT stated that the GPU procurement plan and budget scale have not yet been finalized. Industry sources noted that available data center space is currently limited, making it difficult to secure a large-scale increase in resources by next year, and that the government is evaluating various alternative options.
