Svmuu News: The Kenyan government is investigating the July 18 hacking incident involving President William Ruto’s official website. The attackers briefly took president.go.ke offline and altered the content on the homepage, demanding a ransom of 5 Bitcoin or else they would leak unspecified information by Saturday evening. William Kabogo, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, stated that the government’s ICT Authority immediately activated its cybersecurity response protocol. To contain the incident and conduct a forensic investigation, authorities have temporarily restricted public access to the portal. There is currently no evidence of unauthorized access to sensitive data, data breaches, or information loss, and government systems and digital services remain secure and operational.
It is reported that a Hong Kong-based technical team is collaborating with external technology partners to restore the website and determine the cause of the security breach. It is also reported that Kenya’s critical infrastructure and government systems faced billions of cyber threats over a three-month period earlier this year, and efforts are currently underway to standardize nationwide cybercrime investigations.
