NEAR Protocol: Web3 and AI Infrastructure
NEAR Protocol is a decentralized, open-source Layer 1 blockchain platform designed to address blockchain scalability issues through its innovative Nightshade sharding technology and Threshold Proof-of-Stake (TPoS) consensus mechanism, while providing a user-friendly development environment for decentralized applications (dApps) and Web3 platforms. The NEAR Protocol mainnet launched on April 22, 2020. As of this writing, NEAR is positioning itself as “the blockchain built for AI,” aiming to support applications, agents, and users worldwide while empowering AI agents with true autonomy and deeply integrating security and privacy protection.

NEAR Protocol’s Core Technology and Ecosystem
- Scalability and Efficiency: NEAR Protocol employs Nightshade sharding technology, which allows the network to process transactions in parallel, significantly improving throughput and scalability.
- User-Friendliness: The platform simplifies the onboarding experience and daily use for users through easy-to-read account names, progressive security, and fast transaction finality.
- Developer Support: NEAR supports the use of familiar programming languages such as Rust and JavaScript for writing smart contracts, lowering the barrier to entry for Web2 developers entering the Web3 space.
- Cross-Chain Interoperability: The NEAR ecosystem enables token transfers between Ethereum and NEAR via the Rainbow Bridge. Additionally, the Chain Signatures feature allows NEAR accounts to sign transactions on different blockchains, aiming to achieve broader cross-chain interoperability.
- AI Blockchain Focus: NEAR actively explores the integration of blockchain and artificial intelligence, committing to building an underlying infrastructure capable of supporting AI applications and agents, with an emphasis on security and privacy protection.
NEAR Token Economics
NEAR is the native token of the NEAR Protocol and plays multiple key roles within the network:

- Transaction Fees: Users pay with NEAR to cover the costs of conducting transactions and storing data on the network.
- Staking and Security: NEAR token holders can participate in maintaining network security through staking—either by becoming validators or delegating to validators—and earn NEAR rewards.
- Governance: NEAR token holders have the right to participate in protocol governance and vote on the network’s future direction.
The maximum supply of NEAR tokens is 1 billion. Its inflation model sets an annual inflation cap of up to 5% for rewards, with 90% allocated to validators and 10% to the protocol reserve pool.Of the transaction fees generated by smart contracts, 30% is allocated to developers, and 70% is burned to achieve a deflationary effect.
As of July 21, 2026, the price of NEAR was approximately $1.91, with a market capitalization of $2,479,543,179.02.
How to Obtain NEAR Tokens

The main ways to acquire NEAR tokens include:
Purchasing via Cryptocurrency Exchanges
This is the most direct and common method. Users can purchase NEAR on major global cryptocurrency exchanges that support NEAR trading. The general process is as follows:

- Register and log in to a cryptocurrency exchange that supports NEAR trading (such as Binance, Coinbase, Gate.io, CoinEx, etc.).
- Complete the necessary identity verification (KYC) process.
- Deposit fiat currency (such as USD) or stablecoins (such as USDT) via credit/debit card, bank transfer, or other supported payment methods.
- Search for NEAR on the trading interface and select the appropriate trading pair (e.g., NEAR/USDT).
- Enter the purchase amount, select an order type (such as a limit order or market order), and then execute the purchase.
- The purchased NEAR tokens will appear in your spot account; you can choose to withdraw them to your personal Web3 wallet or continue managing them on the exchange.
Participate in Staking
NEAR token holders can support the network’s operation and earn rewards by staking their tokens. This typically involves locking NEAR within the network, either by running a validator node directly or delegating to an existing validator. Staking rewards are automatically added to the locked tokens based on your contribution.
Participate in Ecosystem Activities or Community Incentive Programs

The NEAR Protocol ecosystem periodically launches various incentive programs, airdrops, or community events; participating in these activities also offers the opportunity to earn NEAR token rewards. For specific participation details, please follow NEAR’s official channels and community announcements.
