What is the FXS token?

FXS (Frax Shares) is the native governance token of the decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Frax Finance. Frax Finance is a hybrid algorithmic stablecoin protocol designed to combine crypto collateral and algorithmic mechanisms to issue FRAX, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The protocol has evolved into a diversified ecosystem that, in addition to the FRAX stablecoin, offers other stablecoins such as FPI and frxETH, as well as staking derivatives, and has built products including Fraxswap, Fraxferry, and Fraxchain.

By locking their FXS tokens, FXS holders can obtain veFXS, which grants them the right to receive a share of the protocol’s revenue and enables them to participate in key governance decisions, including voting rights for DeFi protocols such as Curve and Convex. The FXS token is issued based on the ERC-20 standard on the Ethereum blockchain, meaning it is widely compatible with wallets and DEXs within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Purchasing and Trading FXS Tokens

FXS tokens are primarily purchased and traded through two channels: centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX).

Purchasing via Centralized Exchanges (CEX)

For users who wish to purchase FXS directly with fiat currency, centralized exchanges provide a convenient gateway. Major centralized exchanges that support FXS trading include:

  • Binance (Binance)
  • Kraken
  • Gate.io
  • MEXC
  • HTX
  • Bitget
  • Coinbase

On these platforms, users are typically required to complete the “Know Your Customer” (KYC) verification process. Once verification is complete, users can purchase FXS directly using various fiat payment methods (such as debit cards, credit cards, and bank transfers), or exchange other cryptocurrencies they already hold (such as USDT or ETH) for FXS.

Trading via Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs)

As an ERC-20 token, FXS can also be traded on decentralized exchanges that support the Ethereum network. This method typically requires users to connect to the DEX platform using a self-custodial Web3 wallet (such as MetaMask, Trust Wallet, etc.).

Decentralized exchanges that support FXS trading include:

  • PancakeSwap
  • Curve Finance

Users simply need to deposit compatible cryptocurrencies (such as ETH or USDT) into their Web3 wallet, then connect to one of the above DEXs and select the FXS trading pair to make a trade.

Selling and Withdrawing FXS Tokens

Selling FXS tokens is similar to buying them:

  • Selling on a centralized exchange: Users can sell FXS for fiat currency (such as USD or EUR) and then withdraw the funds to a linked bank account; or they can exchange it for other cryptocurrencies.
  • Selling on Decentralized Exchanges: Users can exchange FXS for other cryptocurrencies, such as ETH or USDT, and then send these cryptocurrencies to a centralized exchange for fiat withdrawal, or continue using them within the DeFi ecosystem.
