Analysis of the Reasons for the Closure

Hotbit officially cited three main reasons for its closure:

  • Deteriorating Operating Conditions: In August 2022, Hotbit came under investigation due to a former senior executive suspected of criminal activity, resulting in the freezing of the company’s assets and the suspension of trading, deposits, and withdrawals. This incident dealt an irreversible blow to the company.
  • Trust Crisis in Centralized Exchanges: Hotbit noted that a series of events—including the collapse of FTX and the decoupling of USDC—severely undermined user trust in centralized exchanges, leading to a continuous outflow of funds. Hotbit believes that the business model of centralized exchanges is becoming increasingly complex and difficult to comply with, and may not align with long-term industry trends.
  • Increase in Cyberattacks: Market participants are facing an increasing number of cyberattacks, which have caused significant financial losses and operational risks for Hotbit.

Key Events During Hotbit’s Operation

Prior to its closure, several notable events occurred during Hotbit’s operational history:

  • August 2022 Suspension of Operations: As mentioned earlier, due to a former employee’s alleged criminal activity, Hotbit’s assets were frozen, causing the platform to suspend all trading, deposit, and withdrawal services.
  • April 2021 Cyberattack: On April 29, 2021, Hotbit suffered a severe cyberattack that paralyzed some of its core services.Although Hotbit claimed that its risk control system prevented attacks on user wallets and that user assets were “safe and secure,” the attackers successfully deleted Hotbit’s database and obtained some users’ plaintext information, including phone numbers, email addresses, and asset data.

Historical Scale and User Asset Security

During its operation, Hotbit was one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges. It once had over 5 million registered users across more than 170 countries and regions worldwide; some sources even indicate that its user base exceeded 7 million as of September 2022.Hotbit was known for supporting a large number of cryptocurrency projects, once offering more than 2,900 trading pairs and ranking among the top exchanges in terms of the variety of listed cryptocurrencies.

Regarding the security of users’ large funds, after Hotbit announced its closure, some users reported difficulties withdrawing their assets.Although Hotbit had assured users of the safety of their funds following a cyberattack in 2021—stating that it had implemented security measures such as multi-layered firewall systems, cold wallet storage, and two-factor authentication (2FA)—the risk of a database breach and the platform’s eventual shutdown serve as reminders to users that they must fully consider potential operational and security risks when choosing a centralized exchange.

Given that Hotbit has permanently shut down, no funds can currently be accessed on the platform, and users should be wary of any unofficial channels claiming to help recover assets from Hotbit.
