The End of the MCO Token and the Brand’s Evolution

The MCO (Monaco) token, once the native token of the cryptocurrency payment platform Monaco, officially came to an end in 2020.Crypto.com (formerly Monaco) announced in August 2020 that it would integrate all functions of the MCO token into its other native token, CRO (Cronos), and launched a mandatory MCO-to-CRO token swap program. The exchange period ran from August 3, 2020, to November 2, 2020. After this deadline, MCO tokens lost all support and utility on the Crypto.com platform.

This means that, as of November 2020, MCO tokens that were not exchanged within the specified timeframe—although they still exist as ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain—no longer have any utility value within any Crypto.com products or services and are no longer eligible for any benefits provided by the platform.

Monaco itself rebranded as Crypto.com in July 2018, and its consumer products—such as the wallet app and Visa payment card—were also renamed to align with the company’s new brand name.

CRO: The Core of the Crypto.com Ecosystem

With the retirement of MCO, the CRO token has fully taken over all functions previously served by both MCO and CRO, becoming the unified core token of the Crypto.com ecosystem. CRO is not only a key component of the Crypto.com trading platform and payment card services but also the fuel that powers the Cronos blockchain (formerly Crypto.org Chain).

Cronos is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built on the Cosmos SDK, designed to scale decentralized applications (dApps) and DeFi protocols. As of this writing, Cronos has attracted over 500 dApps and processes millions of transactions per month, demonstrating its active growth in the Web3 space.

CRO’s Future Outlook and Potential Risks

Market analysts generally agree that CRO’s future prospects are closely tied to the overall growth of the Cronos blockchain and the Crypto.com ecosystem. This includes adoption in areas such as DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and institutional capital inflows. If Cronos can become one of the top blockchains ranked by Total Value Locked (TVL), CRO is expected to benefit from significant network effects.

CRO’s success depends not only on speculative trading but also on fundamental demand, such as users staking CRO to earn payment card benefits, transaction processing on the Cronos chain, and the launch of DeFi protocols. However, CRO also faces intense competition from other EVM-compatible chains, as well as potential risks such as increasingly stringent regulatory scrutiny of exchange tokens and planned token unlocking events.

As for the MCO token, since it was discontinued in 2020 and has no utility value, its prospects no longer exist. Any investment or trading activity involving MCO should be approached with caution, as it is no longer part of the Crypto.com ecosystem.
