Svmuu News: Mirae Asset Consulting has acquired a majority stake in Korbit, South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange, increasing its ownership to 97.15%. The total transaction value was approximately 141.4 billion won, which is equivalent to between $95 million and $102 million at current exchange rates.
The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the transaction on July 9, 2026, determining that the acquisition is unlikely to restrict competition and noting that Korbit held approximately 0.5% of the South Korean cryptocurrency trading market in 2025. Mirae Asset stated that Korbit’s operating entities, user deposits, and core trading services will remain unchanged for the time being, and customer assets will be held in segregated custody in accordance with existing protection rules.
Korbit will be renamed Digital X. Park Hyeon-joo, founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Mirae Asset, said that Digital X is central to Mirae Asset’s “Mirae Asset 3.0” strategy, which aims to connect the tokenization of real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional securities, and digital assets on a single platform.
Mirae Asset noted that Digital X does not aim to surpass Upbit or Bithumb in trading volume but is positioned as an infrastructure platform that combines its securities and asset management expertise with Korbit’s digital asset operations. Digital X will initially operate based on Korbit’s existing licenses and user base.
