Silver (SI=F) September futures opened at $65.06 per ounce on Monday, down 0.1% from Friday's close, then rose to $65.32 by 9:05 a.m. ET, supported by softening consumer spending data.
The precious metal has gained 17.1% over the past month. Signs of declining retail sales and consumer sentiment, reported last week, are seen as lowering the immediate risk of Federal Reserve rate increases. However, the industrial outlook remains uncertain, with J.P.Morgan Global Research noting potential reduced demand from major importers India and China, and solar-panel makers adopting technologies that lessen their reliance on silver.
