The United States imposed new sanctions on nine Cuban state-owned mining, metals, and construction companies and three leaders.
The Cuban Ministry of Construction and government-controlled import companies are among the sanctioned entities, according to a notice published Thursday on the U.S. Treasury Department website. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said these companies and individuals helped "sustain the Cuban regime's oppressive machinery" and organize "subversive networks." The Donald Trump administration's "maximum pressure" campaign has led to power outages and medical shortages in Cuba, which UN officials warn could trigger a humanitarian crisis.
