DAI (commonly written as DAI) is a decentralized stablecoin based on the Ethereum blockchain, with the primary goal of maintaining a 1:1 soft peg to the U.S. dollar. What makes DAI unique is that it does not rely on reserves held by a centralized institution to maintain its value; instead, it achieves stability through smart contracts and overcollateralized crypto assets.DAI is created and managed by MakerDAO (now renamed Sky Protocol), a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) composed of holders of its governance token, MKR, who can propose and vote on protocol parameters.

How DAI Works

DAI’s stability mechanism is primarily based on the following core elements:

  • Overcollateralization: Users can generate (mint) DAI by locking Ethereum (ETH) or other approved crypto assets into “vaults”—smart contracts on the Maker Protocol (Sky Protocol). The value of the collateral typically needs to exceed the value of the borrowed DAI (for example, the collateralization ratio may exceed 150%); this overcollateralization mechanism is designed to mitigate collateral price volatility and ensure that DAI is always adequately backed by assets.
  • Liquidation Mechanism: If the value of the collateral falls below a preset minimum collateral ratio, the system automatically triggers a liquidation, selling a portion of the collateral to repay the DAI debt, thereby protecting DAI’s value peg.
  • Stability Fee and DAI Savings Rate (DSR): Holders of MKR, MakerDAO’s governance token, can vote to adjust the stability fee (the cost of borrowing DAI) and the DAI Savings Rate (DSR, the yield earned for holding DAI).Adjustments to these parameters help influence the supply and demand of DAI, thereby maintaining its peg to the U.S. dollar.
  • Peg Stabilization Module (PSM): The PSM allows users to swap DAI for other centralized stablecoins (such as USDC) at a 1:1 ratio, which helps pull DAI back to its target price through arbitrage mechanisms when its price deviates from $1.

The supply of DAI is elastic, with no fixed cap; it expands and contracts as users mint and redeem DAI using their collateral.

Where to Trade and Buy DAI

As a widely used stablecoin, DAI can be traded and purchased on various centralized and decentralized platforms. Users can view real-time DAI quotes and market data on platforms such as Svmuu, CoinMarketCap, and CoinGecko.

Centralized Exchanges (CEX)

Many mainstream centralized cryptocurrency exchanges support DAI trading and typically offer trading pairs such as DAI/USD, DAI/USDT, and DAI/ETH. These platforms usually provide fiat deposit options, allowing users to purchase DAI directly via bank transfer, credit card, or debit card. Common trading platforms include:

Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs) and DeFi Platforms

DAI plays a significant role in the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and is therefore widely available on various DEXs and DeFi protocols. These platforms typically allow users to trade directly from their non-custodial wallets, such as MetaMask:

  • Curve.fi: Known for its low slippage and high liquidity in stablecoin swaps.
  • Uniswap: A popular decentralized exchange protocol.
  • MetaMask’s built-in purchase feature: Users can buy DAI directly within the MetaMask wallet through integrated payment providers, which support various payment methods including debit cards, credit cards, bank transfers, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
  • ChangeNOW: Offers instant cryptocurrency exchange services.
