AXL is the native cryptocurrency of the Axelar network.Axelar is a decentralized interoperability network designed to address fragmentation within blockchain ecosystems and enable secure, seamless communication and asset transfers between different blockchains. It is hailed as the “Stripe of Web3” and provides programmable infrastructure for developers to build cross-chain decentralized applications (dApps).
How the Axelar Network Works

- Cross-chain Interoperability: Axelar acts as the “Internet of Blockchains,” connecting isolated networks by serving as a universal router, allowing them to seamlessly share data and value. It supports over 50 blockchains, includingEthereum, Polygon, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Cosmos, and Fantom, and is capable of integrating with both EVM and non-EVM chains.
- Generalized Messaging Protocol (GMP): This is Axelar’s core technological innovation, allowing developers to send arbitrary data and trigger smart contract functions on the target chain. This enables complex cross-chain applications, such as cross-chain lending, liquidity aggregators, and cross-chain trading and lending of NFTs.
- Hub-and-Spoke Topology: Axelar employs a hub-and-spoke topology, in which Axelar serves as the central hub, and individual blockchains (spokes) connect to Axelar rather than connecting directly to one another. This design allows tokens wrapped by Axelar (such as axlUSDC and axlETH) to move freely between connected chains and helps isolate issues on a single connected chain, enhancing security.
- Developer-Friendly: Axelar provides APIs and software development kits (SDKs) that simplify the integration of cross-chain functionality, enabling developers to build cross-chain applications without requiring in-depth protocol expertise. For example, Axelar’s Gas and Executor services allow users to pay fees using source-chain tokens just once, without needing to hold AXL tokens or target-chain tokens.
The Role of the AXL Token
AXL is the native utility and governance token of the Axelar ecosystem and plays a key role within the network:

- Paying Transaction Fees: AXL is used to pay network transaction fees, which are rewarded to validators and stakers.
- Rewarding Validators: Axelar is a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network; validators are rewarded with newly minted AXL tokens for generating new blocks and signing transactions.
- Participating in Network Governance: AXL token holders can participate in network governance by staking AXL, voting on proposals such as protocol changes and new feature additions, thereby enabling decentralized decision-making within the ecosystem.
- Bridge for Cross-Chain Communication: AXL serves as the “fuel” and “incentive” for cross-chain communication. Every cross-chain transaction conducted via the Axelar network requires payment through the Axelar Gas service; these fees are converted into AXL and either distributed or burned.
AXL Token Economics
Axelar’s token economics are designed to support the network’s long-term growth and adoption.
- Initial Supply: The total supply of AXL at genesis is 1 billion tokens.
- Inflation and Deflation: The initial base inflation rate is 8%, with an additional 1% external inflation added for each new chain connected in the first year. However, through the fee-burning mechanism, the AXL supply may eventually become deflationary.
- Cobalt Upgrade: In February 2025, Axelar launched the “Cobalt” system upgrade, which had a profound impact on AXL’s token economics. This upgrade introduced a fee-burning mechanism: 98% of AXL transaction fees from all cross-chain transactions are automatically burned, with only 2% allocated to the community reward pool. This marks AXL’s transition to a deflationary model. Additionally, blockchains newly connected to the Axelar network are required to purchase and lock AXL in advance, injecting it into the reward pool to incentivize validators to support the new chain connection.

AXL’s Market Performance (as of July 4, 2026)
AXL entered the public market in 2022, initially trading at approximately $0.85. On February 29, 2024, AXL reached an all-time high of $2.7276. As of July 3, 2026, AXL was trading at approximately $0.04. Its market capitalization is approximately $51–52 million, ranking it around 397th on CoinGecko. Over the past year, AXL’s price has fallen by approximately 86.75% to 86.95%.
Summary

The Axelar Network is dedicated to addressing blockchain interoperability issues and aims to build a more interconnected Web3 ecosystem through its innovative technology and the AXL token. Although the price performance of the AXL token has been affected by market volatility and project developments, its positioning as cross-chain infrastructure and recent improvements to its token economics have garnered it significant attention in the field of blockchain interoperability.
