What Is the REN Token? Core Features of the Ren Protocol
REN is the native token of the Ren Protocol. The Ren Protocol is an open blockchain interoperability protocol whose core objective is to facilitate the transfer of assets and the sharing of liquidity across different blockchain networks.Through the Ren Protocol, users can lock various crypto assets—such as Bitcoin (BTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), and Zcash (ZEC)—within the protocol and mint equivalent ERC-20 tokens, such as renBTC, on smart contract platforms like Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, and Avalanche.This enables holders of these assets to participate in the broader decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem without having to directly sell their assets or perform complex cross-chain operations.
The core technology of the Ren Protocol is its decentralized virtual machine, RenVM, which is maintained by a global network of computers called DarkNodes. These DarkNodes support the operation of RenVM by contributing computing power, storage, and bandwidth, and are rewarded with REN tokens in return.The REN token also serves as the collateral required to run DarkNodes, ensuring the network’s security and stability.
Key Milestones of the REN Token
The Ren Protocol was originally founded in 2017 under the name “Republic Protocol” and was renamed Ren in 2019. In May 2020, the RenVM mainnet officially launched, marking the full activation of its cross-chain capabilities.
However, the Ren Protocol’s development has not been without challenges. In November 2022, the Ren Protocol was significantly impacted by its ties to the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX and its affiliate, Alameda Research, leading to the shutdown of Ren 1.0.This incident prompted the community to initiate the development of Ren 2.0, aimed at building a more decentralized and censorship-resistant cross-chain solution.As part of its rebuilding efforts and to support future growth, the Ren community voted in November 2023 to approve a proposal to mint 200 million new REN tokens to support the project’s continued development and ecosystem growth.
