What is the Raiden Network (RDN)?
The Raiden Network (RDN) is an off-chain scaling solution built on the Ethereum blockchain. Its core objective is to provide near-instant, low-cost, scalable, and privacy-preserving payment capabilities for ERC-20-compatible tokens. It is often compared to the “Lightning Network” in the Ethereum ecosystem and is designed to address the limitations of the Ethereum mainnet in terms of transaction speed and costs.

How the Lightning Network Works
The Lightning Network operates by introducing the mechanism of “payment channels.” The basic principle is as follows:
- Off-chain transactions: Users can open one or more payment channels with each other. Once a channel is established, both parties can conduct an unlimited number of transactions within it, without having to record each transaction on the Ethereum mainchain.
- Reduced Mainchain Interaction: Interaction with the Ethereum mainchain is required only when opening a payment channel (depositing funds) and closing a payment channel (settling the final balance). This greatly reduces the burden on the mainchain, significantly lowering transaction fees and improving processing speed.
- Security: The Lightning Network employs cryptographic techniques such as “balance proofs” to ensure the security and finality of off-chain transactions.
Core Technology and Development Team

The Lightning Network was developed by Brainbot Technologies AG, a German blockchain software company. The company was founded in 2000 by Heiko Hees, who was also one of the early core developers of Ethereum. The team is committed to using innovative technology to increase the transaction throughput of the Ethereum network, enabling it to handle transaction volumes comparable to those of traditional payment networks such as MasterCard and Visa.
History and Challenges
The Lightning Network concept was proposed in 2015, and the first implementation was released in 2017. Toward the end of that year, the project raised funds through a token generation event (TGE), attracting significant participation from the community. Subsequently, the team released multiple mainnet versions, such as the Alderaan version on May 27, 2020.
However, as the Ethereum ecosystem has evolved, the Lightning Network has also faced significant challenges. In 2022, in particular, the high gas fees on the Ethereum mainnet became a major obstacle to the Lightning Network’s adoption, as the cost of opening payment channels was prohibitively high, undermining its low-fee advantage. At the time, the development team stated that they were working to refactor the Lightning Network onto Ethereum Rollups, with the aim of significantly reducing the gas fees associated with opening payment channels. However, as of July 2026, the project’s market activity and influence have declined significantly.

RDN Token Economics and Use Cases
The Raiden Network Token (RDN) is an ERC-20 token with a total supply of 100,000,000 RDN. Its primary intended uses include:
- Paying network fees: RDN was originally intended to be used to pay transaction fees within the Raiden Network.
- Incentivizing node operation: To incentivize users to run Raiden Network nodes to maintain the network’s performance and security.

However, due to the project’s reduced activity, the actual use cases and demand for RDN tokens have significantly diminished.
Market Status and Trading Platforms
As of July 29, 2026, the RDN token’s market performance has been extremely lackluster. Its current price, market capitalization, and 24-hour trading volume are all at very low levels.Public data shows inconsistent reports regarding RDN’s circulating supply; some data even indicates that its circulating supply is close to zero, further confirming the project’s lack of activity.
RDN’s all-time high was $8.65 (or $8.84), reached on January 9, 2018. However, its value has continued to decline since then, reflecting widespread market concerns about its future prospects.

Given the RDN token’s current extremely low trading volume and market activity, although multiple trading platforms have historically supported its trading, the number of platforms currently able to provide sufficient liquidity and support trading of this token may be very limited. Investors intending to trade must verify the listing status and liquidity of the relevant trading platforms on their own before proceeding. Please note that “RDN” listed on certain financial service platforms (such as Robinhood, Public.com, Saxo Bank, Kraken, etc.) may refer to the stock of Radian Group Inc., rather than the Lightning Network cryptocurrency token. Please be sure to distinguish between the two carefully.
