- Liquidity Issues and Slippage: Compared to centralized exchanges, DEXs generally have lower overall liquidity. This is particularly true for assets with low trading volumes or large-value transactions, which can lead to higher trading slippage—that is, a significant discrepancy between the actual execution price and the expected price.
- User Experience and Technical Barriers: Operating a DEX is relatively complex; users must manage their own Web3 wallets, understand gas fees, and approve smart contract interactions, presenting a high barrier to entry for novice users.
- Transaction Speed and Costs: Due to the performance limitations of the underlying blockchain network, DEX transaction speeds can be slow. This is particularly true during periods of network congestion, when transaction confirmation times are prolonged and gas fees may increase significantly.
- Smart Contract Risks: Although smart contracts form the foundation of DEXs, their code may contain vulnerabilities. If exploited maliciously, this could lead to theft from liquidity pools or abnormal transactions. In the derivatives sector, the growth of decentralized perpetual futures DEXs has been particularly rapid. In 2024, the total trading volume of perpetual DEXs reached $1.5 trillion, more than doubling from the $647.6 billion recorded in 2023.Among them, Hyperliquid’s trading volume surged from $21 billion to $570 billion in 2024, capturing approximately 80% of the decentralized perpetual DEX market.
