Cold Storage: Offline Custody, Higher Security

Cold storage refers to completely or partially disconnecting Bitcoin private keys from the internet, thereby minimizing the risk of online attacks. This method is generally considered the best option for storing large amounts of Bitcoin or for long-term holding.
Hardware Wallets
- Features: Hardware wallets are physical devices specifically designed to store private keys offline. Private keys are securely stored in an encrypted chip inside the device and never touch the internet. When making a transaction, the device connects to a computer or mobile phone, signs the transaction, and then goes offline again.
- Pros: Offers extremely high security, effectively resisting online hacking, malware, and phishing. User-friendly interface, easy to set up and manage. Even if the device is lost, as long as the seed phrase (Secret Recovery Phrase) is properly kept, assets can still be recovered.
- Cons: Requires purchasing a device, which involves an initial investment. Each transaction requires a physical connection to the device, making it slightly less convenient than online wallets.
- Security Advice: Always purchase from official manufacturers or authorized resellers to prevent device tampering. Store your hardware wallet and seed phrase in a safe, hidden, fireproof, and waterproof location, such as a bank vault or home safe.
Paper Wallets
- Features: A paper wallet is a completely offline storage method where Bitcoin's public key (address) and private key are printed on paper in text or QR code form.
- Pros: Completely offline, theoretically immune to all digital attacks. Extremely low cost, only requires a printer and paper.
- Cons: Susceptible to physical damage (e.g., fire, water damage, tearing) or theft. Once lost or damaged, and without a backup, Bitcoin will be permanently lost. When spending, the private key needs to go "online," posing a risk of interception. Nowadays, due to its operational complexity and potential risks, paper wallets are considered a relatively outdated method and are not as recommended as hardware wallets.

Air-gapped Devices

- Cons: Complex to set up and maintain, not suitable for average users. Transaction process is cumbersome.
Multisig Wallets (Multisignature Wallets)
- Features: A multisig wallet requires a portion of multiple private keys (e.g., two out of three keys) to approve a transaction. These keys can be held by different people or stored on different devices.
- Pros: Significantly reduces the risk of single points of failure, such as a single device loss, private key compromise, or coercion of an individual. Even if one key is stolen, the attacker cannot transfer funds alone.

Hot storage refers to storing Bitcoin private keys on devices or services connected to the internet. This method is convenient and fast, suitable for small transactions and daily use.

Software Wallets
- Features: Software wallets are applications where private keys are stored on internet-connected devices. They can be desktop applications, mobile applications, or browser plugins.
- Types:
- Desktop Wallets: Installed on personal computers, such as Electrum, Exodus.
- Mobile Wallets: Mobile phone applications, such as BlueWallet.
- Web Wallets: Accessed via a browser, private keys may be hosted by a third party or generated locally.
- Pros: Convenient and fast, easy access to funds, suitable for frequent transactions or daily payments.
- Cons: Private keys are stored online, susceptible to hacking, malware infection, and phishing scams.

Exchange Wallets

- Pros: Convenient for buying, selling, and trading Bitcoin.
- Cons: The custodial nature means you don't truly own the private keys and lack full control over your funds. There is a risk of the exchange being hacked, going bankrupt, or restricting withdrawals.
- Security Advice: Only use for small transactions or short-term turnover; it is not recommended for long-term storage of large amounts of Bitcoin. Enable all security features provided by the exchange, such as two-factor authentication, withdrawal whitelists, etc.
Bitcoin Storage Security Best Practices

Regardless of the storage method chosen, the following security practices are crucial:
- Back up your seed phrase/private key: The seed phrase is key to recovering your wallet. Be sure to back it up in multiple secure, physically separate locations (e.g., home safe, bank vault). Consider using fireproof and waterproof metal plates for backup.
