The Rise of Hong Kong Fiat-Pegged Stablecoins
The term "HKD Stablecoin" primarily refers to fiat-pegged stablecoins that are 1:1 pegged to the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) under the regulatory framework of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). As Hong Kong actively advances in virtual asset regulation, these stablecoins are gradually entering the market, aiming to provide compliant and transparent digital HKD solutions.
Regulatory Framework and First Batch of Licenses

Hong Kong's "Stablecoin Ordinance" officially came into effect on August 1, 2025, setting strict licensing requirements for the issuance of fiat-pegged stablecoins (especially HKD-pegged stablecoins) in Hong Kong. Under this ordinance, issuing institutions must obtain a license from the HKMA.
As of April 10, 2026, the HKMA has granted the first batch of stablecoin issuance licenses to a consortium led by HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank (Anchorpoint Financial Limited). This milestone marks a significant step for Hong Kong in building a regulated digital asset ecosystem.
Key HKD Stablecoin Projects
- HKDAP: Issued by Anchorpoint Financial Limited, HKDAP is Hong Kong's first officially approved HKD-pegged stablecoin. HKDAP successfully completed real-time transfer tests on the Ethereum mainnet in May 2026 and plans for phased issuance by the end of Q2 2026. Its goal is to be 1:1 pegged to the HKD and strictly adhere to regulatory requirements, ensuring high quality, high liquidity, and equivalent value of reserve assets to the issuance amount.
- HSBC HKD Stablecoin: HSBC, as one of the first institutions to obtain a license, also plans to launch its HKD stablecoin in the second half of 2026.
The launch of these HKD stablecoins aims to provide reliable settlement tools for Hong Kong's digital economy, especially in wholesale and business-to-business (B2B) scenarios, while retail adoption may take longer.
Trading Prospects and Channels for HKD Stablecoins

Given the compliant nature of these HKD stablecoins, their future buying and selling will primarily occur through licensed virtual asset trading platforms in Hong Kong. For example, licensed exchanges such as OSL Group and PantherTrade have participated in HKDAP's real-time transfer tests and are expected to support relevant trading pairs once these stablecoins are fully issued.
Currently, as HKDAP and HSBC's HKD stablecoins are not yet fully issued to the retail market, there are no direct retail purchase channels. Readers should pay attention to official announcements from relevant issuing institutions and licensed exchanges for the latest listing and trading information.
Current HKD and Cryptocurrency Trading Methods
Before the full popularization of new HKD stablecoins, users can still trade other mainstream stablecoins (such as USDT and USDC) using Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) through licensed virtual asset exchanges in Hong Kong.
- Licensed Exchanges: Hong Kong licensed exchanges such as HashKey Exchange and OSL allow users to deposit HKD via bank transfer, Faster Payment System (FPS), or Electronic Direct Debit Authorization (eDDA) to purchase stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
- Risk Warning: Please ensure you choose licensed platforms regulated by the HKMA or the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for trading to ensure asset security and compliance.

Important Notice
The primary value of stablecoins lies in their price stability, not investment appreciation. Investors should fully understand the associated risks and ensure compliance with the laws and regulations of their jurisdiction before participating in any cryptocurrency transactions.
