Current State of Cryptocurrency Regulation in Mainland China
Since 2021, mainland China has adopted strict prohibition policies on virtual currency transactions and related business activities. On February 6, 2026, eight departments, including the People's Bank of China (PBOC), reiterated that virtual currency-related business activities are illegal financial activities and are strictly prohibited within the country. At the same time, overseas virtual currency exchanges are explicitly prohibited from providing services to residents within China. This move aims to maintain national financial order and prevent financial risks.

Despite strict regulations, a ruling by the Shanghai Songjiang Court in November 2024 confirmed that cryptocurrency is recognized as "virtual property" under Chinese law, and personal holdings are protected by law. However, this does not mean that transactions or related services can be legally conducted or operated. The regulatory focus is on combating cross-border money laundering and illegal capital outflows, rather than encouraging or allowing large-scale ordinary transactions.
For users in mainland China, any attempt to conduct Bitcoin transactions through international platforms carries significant legal and financial risks, including but not limited to issues such as frozen bank cards. Therefore, users must fully understand and comply with local laws and regulations before participating.
