Multisig and Private Key Control
- 2-of-2 Multisig: GreenAddress typically employs a 2-of-2 multisignature configuration. This means that a Bitcoin transaction requires two independent private key signatures to be valid. One private key is fully controlled by the user, while the other is held by the GreenAddress service (now Blockstream servers). This design ensures that neither party can move funds independently, significantly reducing the risk of a single point of failure.
- User Private Key Ownership: The user's private key is always generated and kept by the user themselves. GreenAddress servers do not store, access, or control the user's private key. This guarantees the user's ultimate control over their funds.
Transaction Verification and Instant Confirmation

- Transaction-Level Two-Factor Authentication: GreenAddress implements transaction-level two-factor authentication through its multisignature mechanism. When a user initiates a transaction, GreenAddress will only provide its second signature after the user approves it via their chosen 2FA method (such as email, SMS, phone bot, or Google Authenticator). This adds an extra layer of security to each transaction.
- Instant Transaction Confirmation: Because GreenAddress co-signs transactions, recipients can receive instant transaction confirmation. This means transactions are considered to have higher legitimacy on the Bitcoin network and can typically be considered confirmed faster, reducing waiting times.
Account Recovery and Privacy Protection
- Pre-generated Time-Locked Transactions: GreenAddress offers an innovative account recovery mechanism. During the wallet setup process, users receive pre-generated nLockTime (time-locked) transactions. In a 2-of-2 multisig setup, if the GreenAddress service is unexpectedly interrupted or inaccessible, users can access and recover their funds using only their single private key after the preset time-lock period expires. This provides users with additional security and self-recovery capabilities.
- Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) Wallet: GreenAddress is a Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallet compliant with BIP0032/BIP0039 standards. It generates new public addresses for each incoming transaction, which helps enhance user transaction privacy.
