Introduction to Polkadot (DOT) Staking
Polkadot is a heterogeneous multi-chain network designed to connect and secure multiple blockchains, with its core consensus mechanism being Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS). In the NPoS model, network security is jointly maintained by two key types of participants: Validators and Nominators. Validators are responsible for running nodes, creating new blocks, and validating transactions, while Nominators support and trust specific Validators by staking their DOT tokens, thereby jointly maintaining network security and sharing staking rewards.

As a Nominator, participating in DOT staking not only provides security for the Polkadot network but also offers the opportunity to earn a certain annualized return. Depending on market conditions and network participation, the estimated annualized return for Polkadot staking typically fluctuates between 5% and 16%. However, staking also comes with risks. If the chosen Validator engages in improper behavior (e.g., prolonged offline periods, attacking the network, or running modified software), their staked DOT and a portion of the DOT staked by Nominators supporting that Validator may be "slashed."
Main Methods of DOT Staking

Nominators can participate in DOT staking through various methods, each with its own characteristics:
- Direct Nomination (via Polkadot.js): This is the most direct method, where users independently select Validators for nomination through official interfaces like Polkadot.js. This method offers the greatest control and flexibility but requires a higher level of technical understanding and active management. Direct nomination typically requires a higher minimum staking amount, for example, around 250 DOT.
- Nomination Pools: To lower the barrier to entry, Polkadot introduced the Nomination Pools mechanism. Multiple small-amount Nominators can pool their DOT together to jointly nominate Validators. This method greatly simplifies the selection process and allows participation with as little as 1 DOT, making it suitable for small holders.
- Centralized Exchanges or Staking Platforms: Many mainstream cryptocurrency exchanges offer custodial DOT staking services. Users simply deposit DOT into the platform, and the platform manages the staking process and distributes rewards on their behalf. This method is easy to operate, but users lose control over their private keys, and platforms typically charge a service fee, which may result in a slightly lower return than direct nomination.
- Hardware Wallet Cold Staking (e.g., Ledger): Some hardware wallets support DOT cold staking, allowing users to select Validators for nomination while keeping their private keys offline and secure. This combines security with a certain degree of flexibility.
Key Considerations for Choosing Reliable Validator Nodes

Choosing one or more reliable Validators is crucial for successful DOT staking. Here are the factors Nominators should focus on:
- Validator Identity Verification and Reputation: Prioritize Validators with verified identities, usually indicated by a green icon in the Polkadot developer interface. Also, understand the Validator's reputation and activity in the community, ensuring they have accessible channels (e.g., website, social media).
- Commission Rate: Validators take a certain percentage of the earned rewards as commission. As of the runtime upgrade in March 2026, the minimum commission rate for Polkadot Validators is 10%. While a low commission may seem appealing, an excessively low commission might indicate that the Validator lacks sufficient resources to maintain infrastructure. It is more important to choose a Validator with a reasonable commission that can provide stable service.
- Validator Self-Stake: The amount of DOT staked by the Validator themselves, also known as "Skin in the game." A high self-stake generally indicates that the Validator's interests are highly aligned with the network, making them more inclined to maintain network stability and their own reputation. As of March 2026, Validators must maintain a self-stake of at least 10,000 DOT.
- Historical Performance and Stability: Check the Validator's historical operational records, including their uptime, Era Points, elected stake, rewards earned, and any slashing records. Choose Validators with a long history of stable and good performance.
- Avoid Oversubscribed Nodes: Polkadot's reward distribution mechanism stipulates that if a Validator is nominated by more than 256 Nominators, only the 256 Nominators with the highest stake will receive rewards. Therefore, avoid choosing overly popular, oversubscribed Validators. Instead, opt for nodes with fewer Nominators that can still consistently get elected, to increase the chances of receiving rewards.
- Diversify Risk, Choose Multiple Validators: To diversify risk and increase the chances of receiving rewards, it is recommended that Nominators choose as many trustworthy Validators as possible (up to 16). This way, even if one Validator encounters issues, it will not affect all staking returns.
- Continuous Monitoring and Management: Nomination is an active management role. Validator commission rates can change at any time, and their performance may fluctuate. Nominators should regularly monitor the status of their chosen Validators and adjust their nomination strategy if necessary.

Important Notes for DOT Staking
Participating in DOT staking requires attention to the 28-day unbonding period. During this period, unbonded DOT cannot be traded and will not earn staking rewards. Additionally, the Polkadot active Validator set is updated every 24 hours (one "Era"), and only Validators with sufficient staked amounts (typically the top 297 Validators) are selected as active Validators.
