IFO (Initial Farm Offering) is a unique token issuance mechanism in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. It is essentially an evolution of ICO (Initial Coin Offering) in the DeFi environment, aiming to leverage liquidity mining (farming) to raise funds for emerging projects and establish initial liquidity.
How IFOs Work
IFOs are typically hosted by decentralized exchange (DEX) platforms. The basic process is as follows: a project team partners with a DEX to set up a dedicated liquidity pool. Participants "farm" by staking specified tokens (usually the DEX's native token or specific liquidity pair tokens) into this pool, and in return, they receive newly issued project tokens.
This model combines fundraising with liquidity provision. While the project team obtains funding, they also create an initial trading market for the new token. For participants, it offers an opportunity to acquire tokens at a preset price before they are publicly traded, and potentially earn additional returns by providing liquidity.
Core Platforms and Evolution
PancakeSwap is the most prominent pioneer and practitioner of the IFO model. Its IFO activities primarily take place on the BNB Smart Chain and have expanded to other networks such as Ethereum and Arbitrum. PancakeSwap's IFO mechanism has undergone several iterations. For example, the IFO 3.0 version, launched in late 2021, introduced a point system based on CAKE token staking to prioritize long-term holders.
Notably, according to public information, as of October 2025, PancakeSwap has rebranded such early token acquisition activities as "CAKE.PAD," aiming to streamline the process and enhance the utility of its native CAKE token.

Representative IFO Concept Tokens
Historically, several well-known projects have launched or conducted early distribution through the IFO model. Here are some representative cases:
- Polygon (MATIC): Its predecessor, Matic Network, raised funds early on through platforms like Binance Launchpad (a centralized platform issuance), but the IFO concept is often used to discuss its early community acquisition methods.
- Alpha Finance Lab (ALPHA): A cross-chain DeFi product ecosystem, its tokens were distributed early through PancakeSwap's IFO.
- Polkastarter (POLS): A decentralized platform built for cross-chain token pools and auctions, its tokens were also distributed early through IFO-like mechanisms.
- Band Protocol (BAND): A decentralized oracle network, its early community rounds involved similar liquidity mining acquisition methods.
- Eigenpie: In September 2024, this was PancakeSwap's first IFO project on the Arbitrum network, marking its multi-chain expansion.
Additionally, some football fan tokens (such as Santos FC Fan Token) have also been issued through PancakeSwap's IFO model.
Summary and Risk Warning
As a DeFi-native fundraising tool, IFOs lower project launch barriers and promote community participation. However, participating in IFOs also carries risks such as market volatility, smart contract vulnerabilities, project failure, and temporary liquidity lock-ups. Investors should conduct independent research on project fundamentals, tokenomics, and security audits before participating. As the industry evolves, IFO-like mechanisms are continuously being improved and reshaped by various platforms.
