What is the Total Supply of CELO?
CELO is the native utility and governance token of the Celo network. In terms of supply cap, CELO has a maximum supply fixed at 1 billion tokens; no new CELO will be generated once this cap is reached. Concurrently, its total supply is also recorded as 1 billion tokens, making CELO a token model with a "capped total supply, with a portion released gradually."
What is the Current Circulating Supply?

Circulating supply changes over time. As of November 1, 2026, the circulating supply of CELO was approximately 609.98 million tokens; as of October 31, 2026, the circulating supply was approximately 608.42 million tokens. These two figures are statistical snapshots from adjacent dates, indicating a slow change in circulating supply. Compared to the maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, a circulating supply of approximately 610 million tokens means a significant portion is still not fully in circulation.
How are the 1 Billion Tokens Released?
When the Celo mainnet launched in April 2020, approximately 600 million CELO tokens were released into early circulation and distribution. The remaining approximately 400 million CELO tokens are distributed through epoch rewards to network validators, community funds, and other destinations.

CELO's allocation covers categories such as team, advisors, founders and contributors, community grants, presale, initial reserve, operational grants, and staking and validator reserves. These allocations typically follow vesting schedules, primarily employing a cliff vesting mechanism, with the full unlock plan extending until 2050. Therefore, when discussing "supply," it is necessary to distinguish between maximum supply, total supply, and circulating supply.
Role of CELO in the Celo Network
CELO is used to pay transaction fees and participate in protocol governance voting, and it also serves as a reserve asset for fiat-pegged stablecoins in the Celo ecosystem, such as cUSD, cEUR, and cREAL. As part of its long-term economic design, the Celo ecosystem once discussed converting stablecoin transaction fees into CELO to increase demand pressure on CELO.
Regarding inflation parameters, Celo had reduced its inflation rate from 2% to 1% around the time of the L2 hard fork. At the application level, Celo also supports stablecoin payments in emerging markets through applications like MiniPay. Trading activity, inflation parameters, and unlock schedules all affect circulating supply, but they are not equivalent to price performance.

What to Note When Looking at CELO Supply Data?
- Maximum supply answers "total cap" and is not equivalent to the current tradable quantity in the market.
- Total supply may include tokens that have been issued but are not yet fully in circulation.
- Circulating supply is affected by unlocks, staking, burning, and statistical methodologies, and it changes over time.
- Different data platforms may provide slightly different snapshots for the same date; when comparing, one should first verify the time, currency unit, and supply methodology.
