Pinterest’s stock rose 3% on Friday after The Information predicted that OpenAI would acquire the social media platform in 2026. In a report titled “Sutskever’s Fate, OpenAI’s Next Deal, A Hit Robot—and 13 Other Predictions for 2026,” The Information reporter Ann Gehan stated that OpenAI would acquire Pinterest to bolster its online shopping and advertising businesses, calling it OpenAI’s “largest acquisition to date.”According to Gehan, OpenAI is primarily interested in Pinterest’s image database, existing advertising infrastructure, and established merchant relationships. She noted that Pinterest’s digital scrapbook feature could complement OpenAI’s image and video generation tools while helping it compete with other AI leaders such as Google. The report notes that Pinterest’s stock price is currently around $25, similar to levels seen in early 2023, with the company’s market capitalization at approximately $17.5 billion.Pinterest co-founders Ben Silbermann and Paul Sciarra control about two-thirds of the company’s voting shares, though Silbermann has not been involved in the company’s day-to-day operations since stepping down as CEO in mid-2022.Although Pinterest has implemented AI features such as conversational search to compete with ChatGPT and similar platforms, forecasts suggest that OpenAI may view a direct acquisition of the company as more valuable than competing against it.
