Off-Island Duty-Free Spending Soars in Hainan During New Year's Holiday
Data from Qunar Travel shows that during the New Year’s holiday, the increase in airfare to Haikou and Sanya was the highest in the country, and hotel occupancy near several duty-free stores more than doubled year-over-year. According to statistics from Haikou Customs, on January 2, 2026, Haikou Customs supervised the sale of 159,000 items through Hainan’s duty-free shopping program for departing passengers, a year-on-year increase of 70.6%; the number of shoppers reached 33,000, up 77.6% year-on-year; and the total shopping amount was 254 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 156.6%.
