On the 3rd, Berlin police and the Berlin power grid operator reported that a fire broke out on a suspension bridge over the Teltow Canal in southern Berlin, damaging multiple power lines leading to a nearby power plant. This caused a power outage across most of southwest Berlin, affecting 50,000 households as well as local nursing homes and hospitals. Some traffic lights and mobile networks were also rendered inoperable. The fire has now been extinguished, and Berlin police are investigating; the cause of the fire remains unknown. Berlin’s power grid operator stated that the work to replace the damaged lines is highly complex, and the power outage may last until the 8th, with heating services likely to be interrupted in some areas.
