The Republicans’ best chance of holding onto their slim five-seat majority in the House of Representatives in 2026 and beyond may lie in the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling on the Voting Rights Act.Since 1978, no party has managed to maintain unified control of the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate following a midterm election. Recent indicators—from declining approval ratings on Donald Trump to the Democrats’ strong performance in the 2025 elections—make it difficult for Republicans to be optimistic about breaking this curse.Even the strategy of pressuring “red states” to redraw district boundaries—as seen at Donald Trump—has largely fallen flat. However, the Supreme Court’s Republican-appointed majority may offer House Republicans a “lifeline.”During oral arguments last fall, conservative justices appeared poised to significantly curtail—or even overturn entirely—provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that prohibit discriminatory election laws targeting minority groups.Currently, non-white Republicans account for only about 10% of the House Republican caucus. This means that if red states eliminate seats designed for minorities, these Democratic lawmakers of color are likely to be replaced by more white Republicans.
