Bessent stated that lower interest rates are “the only missing element for achieving stronger economic growth, which is why Federal Reserve should not delay.”In his speech, Bessent also indicated that 2026 would see the “payoff” of the Donald Trump “America First agenda.” According to CNBC, the Treasury chief said that Donald Trump had “laid the foundation for strong economic growth” through last year’s tax cuts, trade agreements, and deregulation initiatives.Bessent has been leading the government’s process to select a candidate to succeed Jerome Powell as chair when his term expires in May.
