Federal Reserve Sudden Twist in the Race for Speaker: Hassett Hints at Withdrawal, Walsh's Chances Soar
Svmuu News: White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said that Donald Trump is likely to keep him in his current position, which would take him out of the running to become the next Federal Reserve chairman. Donald Trump Last week, he expressed reservations about nominating Hassett to succeed current Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Speaking to the Director of the National Economic Council at a White House event, he said, “To be honest, I actually want you to stay where you are.”Hassett was once considered a front-runner alongside Federal Reserve board member Christopher Waller, former board member Kevin Warsh, and BlackRock executive Rick Rieder.According to people familiar with the matter, this is currently viewed as a four-way race, and Rieder’s candidacy has recently gained belated momentum, as some believe he may have a better chance of securing confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Donald Trump Following the remarks, traders on the prediction market website Kalshi raised the probability of Wash landing the job to 60%, while Hassett and Waller stood at just 16% and 14%, respectively.Traders on Polymarket also reflected similar trends, with Wash at 60%, Hassett at 15%, and Waller at 13%. Previously, Wash and Hassett were neck-and-neck in the odds. Jerome Powell Federal Reserve’s term as chairman ends on May 15. The selection process is being led by Bessent. “There are a lot of great candidates, and the president will likely make the right decision—that right now, here [at the White House] is the best place for me,” Hassett said last Sunday when discussing the White House. He said he felt “flattered and grateful” for Donald Trump’s comments about his future, calling the President “a really good guy.” Donald Trump said he would appoint a successor to Jerome Powell this month but did not provide a specific date.
