Svmuu News: On Monday, the South Korean government announced plans for major projects in the fields of semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated that the country needs to secure the development of AI components faster than other nations and must complete the construction of semiconductor production facilities as soon as possible. Current factory sites are nearing their limits in terms of water resources and other infrastructure. The southwestern region will invest between 5 trillion and 20 trillion won in the new projects, while Gwangju and Jeolla may invest 520 trillion won in the projects.
Regarding detailed plans for factory construction, the South Korean government announced that four chip factories are expected to be built in the southwest, with an investment of approximately 800 trillion won; Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will each build two new factories; Investment in the semiconductor sector is expected to reach at least 30 trillion won over the next 15 years, covering areas such as next-generation memory, edge AI, and defense. Investment in the semiconductor packaging cluster in the Chungcheong region is projected to reach 81 trillion won. Approximately 550 trillion won is expected to be invested in the construction of AI data centers.
The South Korean government expects to double DRAM production capacity within five years, and forecasts that the global memory market will quadruple in size over the same period. South Korean officials also stated that they aim to distribute the benefits of this growth to the public. (Jin Shi)
