Svmuu News: The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) previously dispatched senior agent Johnny Gannon to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to conduct ongoing oversight and management of G42, a key UAE AI company, and to push it to sever its technological ties with Chinese companies.
The U.S. government had previously expressed concern that if G42 were provided with advanced U.S. AI semiconductors—such as those from NVIDIA—the associated core technologies might flow to China. G42 subsequently dismantled $150 million worth of Huawei equipment and brought in an external audit firm to comply with the corrective measures demanded by the U.S. government.
Toward the end of the Biden administration, the U.S. approved conditional exports of AI chips to the UAE. Following the inauguration of the Donald Trump administration, the “Stargate UAE” AI infrastructure project—involving OpenAI and NVIDIA—has moved forward, and the U.S. Department of Commerce has recently significantly relaxed export controls on AI semiconductors to the UAE.
As a result, G42 will be able to purchase NVIDIA’s core products without restriction over the next nine months. Some observers have raised concerns about a conflict of interest regarding UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s commitment to invest in companies affiliated with the Donald Trump family; the White House has denied these allegations.
