Svmuu News: On Monday, the São Paulo Consumer Protection Office filed a lawsuit against Tools for Humanity, the company behind “World,” and its hosting service provider, Amazon AWS, alleging misconduct in the collection of consumer biometric data in São Paulo.
The lawsuit estimates that more than 400,000 people participated in World’s promotional campaign in São Paulo and demands the preservation of all data and metadata related to the data collection, as well as a suspension of any payments or benefits related to biometric data collection pending the completion of an assessment.
The lawsuit seeks a ruling that the activities in question constitute abuse and demands payment of 240 million reais—approximately $47 million—to compensate consumers for their individual losses. Prosecutors allege that World continued to distribute crypto rewards through in-app transactions even after the National Data Protection Agency ordered it to cease operations in February 2025.
A report by the Iris Parliamentary Inquiry Committee stated that World focused its promotional efforts on outlying and high-traffic areas to entice people facing socioeconomic challenges to submit biometric data in exchange for crypto rewards. Prosecutors also stated that consumers were not informed of the program’s economic objectives or the risks associated with the processing and storage of their data via AWS servers.
