Svmuu News: On July 24, local time, UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stéphan Dujarric issued a statement on behalf of the Secretary-General, stating that Secretary-General António Guterres was deeply shocked by the Houthi rebels’ resumption of attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea and their renewed threats to maritime navigation. The statement noted that such actions could further exacerbate regional tensions and potentially draw Yemen deeper into regional conflicts. It warned that the continued deterioration of the situation in Yemen would undermine prospects for peace and have severe economic, humanitarian, and environmental repercussions for the region and beyond. Guterres called on all parties to immediately de-escalate the situation and urged the Houthi forces to cease all further attacks or other escalatory actions and to strictly comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2722 and subsequent resolutions regarding the protection of commercial vessels and the maintenance of freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Guterres also emphasized that international navigation rights and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Mandeb and its surrounding waters must be fully restored. (CCTV News)
