Svmuu News: According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI and Anthropic have held closed-door discussions with U.S. regulators in Washington, D.C., in an effort to push for stricter restrictions on open-source models. What began as a technical debate has now escalated into a battle over who holds the power to set industry rules.Open-source models have lowered the barrier for companies and developers to adopt advanced AI technologies and have helped Chinese models rapidly gain a global user base. Overseas developers and companies can directly download, modify, and deploy these models without having to pay high API call fees.
This has also put competitive pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies are expressing their concerns about the development of Chinese open-source models to U.S. regulators, hoping the Donald Trump government will impose stricter restrictions on them.
At the same time, they continue to emphasize the potential security risks posed by advanced AI models. Both companies believe that as models’ capabilities continue to approach or even exceed those of humans, making model weights fully public—allowing any organization to download, modify, and deploy them—will increase the risk of model misuse.
OpenAI has previously stated publicly that it hopes to establish a government-led AI safety assessment system to implement mandatory safety testing for certain advanced models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has repeatedly emphasized that open-source models may lower the threshold for the proliferation of dangerous capabilities, and therefore stricter regulatory measures should be adopted.
