The Claude Mythos Preview model from AI company Anthropic discovered an attack in approximately 60 hours that halved the effective key strength of the HAWK digital signature algorithm, at a cost of about $100,000. HAWK is a quantum-resistant algorithm designed to replace existing digital signature schemes, but it has not yet been deployed, and Bitcoins do not currently use it.This attack reduces the key recovery cost for HAWK’s minimal parameter set from approximately 2^64 operations to 2^38 operations, highlighting AI’s ability to accelerate cryptographic attacks, although it does not currently affect existing transactions on Bitcoin or Ethereum.
