Amazon Zoox, its autonomous driving subsidiary, received a temporary exemption from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday, allowing it to deploy up to 2,500 autonomous vehicles annually for two years and begin offering a paid robotaxi service.Zoox CEO Aicha Evans said the move marks a significant milestone for the company and the autonomous driving industry. A Zoox spokesperson said the company will launch its paid ride-hailing service in Las Vegas next month and will gradually expand to other markets in the future.
