Bloomberg, based on an analysis of data from the Bank of Japan (BOJ) account, noted that the Japanese government may have intervened in the foreign exchange market on Thursday, July 30, buying yen and selling dollars in a transaction worth approximately 8.45 trillion yen (about $52.8 billion).During early trading in U.S. markets that day, the USD/JPY exchange rate plummeted by nearly 500 points in less than an hour, briefly falling below the 158 mark, with an intraday decline of 3.3%.Although Japanese Finance Minister Katayama Gotsuki and Finance Vice Minister Mimura Jun both declined to comment on the matter, Mimura Jun stated that Japan had received support from the United States that went “beyond mere moral support.” U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent also remarked that the yen “appears to be severely undervalued.”
