Nikkei Asia: Unlike during the dot-com bubble, Asian tech companies and investors are playing a central role in Asia’s current AI boom
The editorial team at Nikkei Asia points out that, compared to the internet bubble 25 years ago, the current AI boom presents significant differences for Asia. The main distinction is that Asian tech companies are at the center of this rally, and a large number of Asian investors—including many retail investors—have poured massive amounts of capital into these companies. The article cites SK Hynix as an example: the company’s second-quarter net profit surged more than 13-fold year-over-year, with revenue, operating profit, and net profit all hitting quarterly records. However, its stock price still declined following the earnings release because operating profit fell short of analysts’ average expectations, reflecting a shift in market sentiment and heightened skepticism.
