SoftBank Group Q2 Net Profit Down 18% YoY to $2.4 Billion, But Far Exceeds Expectations Due to $8.5 Billion Gain from Intel Stake; OpenAI IPO Delay Remains a Cloud
SoftBank Group on Wednesday announced its quarterly results, showing a net profit of 347.3 billion yen (approximately $2.4 billion), an 18% year-on-year decrease. However, this figure significantly exceeded analysts' average expectation of 166 billion yen. The better-than-expected performance was primarily driven by a 1.3 trillion yen (approximately $8.5 billion) investment gain from its Intel holdings, as Intel's stock price surged by 216% in the quarter ending June. Nevertheless, the valuation gain from SoftBank's core bet on OpenAI was relatively limited, and its Vision Fund portfolio also experienced a decline. Uncertainty surrounding OpenAI's IPO and SoftBank's increasing debt pressure continue to pose severe challenges to its AI strategy. To support its total estimated investment of $65 billion in OpenAI, SoftBank has signed a $40 billion bridge loan and a $20 billion margin loan, leading to a significant increase in its leverage ratio.
