Clément Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, stated that China currently dominates the open-source model space and could begin to lead in frontier AI by the end of this year or next. Despite limitations in advanced AI hashrate, Chinese AI models are continuously narrowing the performance gap with cutting-edge U.S. systems. For example, Beijing-based Moonshot's Kimi K3 model has approached or even surpassed top models from Anthropic and OpenAI in certain benchmarks. Experts believe China leads in robotics and open-source models, offering powerful and cost-effective models that could become the preferred AI technology for developing countries. However, the U.S. maintains an overall AI advantage due to its overwhelming hashrate superiority, most advanced models, strong technological alliances, and ability to attract talent and private capital.
