As recently as August 5, Google's AI Overview was providing incorrect information that Flock license plate camera readers held up to 23 pounds of copper and several grams of gold, valued at approximately $650. This claim originated from a long-circulating online joke among privacy activists, suggesting the cameras contained a small fortune in metal. Google's AI failed to recognize it as a joke and propagated it as fact. By August 6, the AI Overview had corrected the information, stating that the copper claim was false as the entire unit weighs only about three pounds, and any gold content is trace-level, attributing the rumors to internet memes and AI hallucinations.
