The Nikkei index rose 1.2% in early trading to 66376.25 points, boosted by weak US employment data which lowered expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
Electronics and metal stocks led the gains, with Ibiden up 7.4%, Furukawa Electric up 8.8%, and Sumitomo Metal Mining up 5.7%. The dollar-yen exchange rate was quoted at 157.88, down from 158.30 yen at Friday's close in Tokyo.
