South African coal producer Thungela Resources' first-half profit doubled, influenced by the war in Iran, as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz led to a tightening of global energy supplies.
Al Jazeera reported that the US-Israel war with Iran disrupted global crude oil and natural gas supplies, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which obstructed about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supply. In this context, the coal industry benefited, with South African thermal coal producer Thungela Resources doubling its first-half profit as the war forced more countries to purchase coal. The company expects coal prices to remain high as European and Asian markets prepare for winter.
