Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co., has received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to provide electricity services for OpenAI's data center project in Effingham County. This 25-year agreement will cover approximately 3.2 gigawatts of new power demand. Georgia Power anticipates that multiple large customers, including the OpenAI project, will save existing customers approximately $950 million annually in electricity costs starting in 2029, totaling $2.847 billion by 2031. OpenAI will bear all infrastructure and power service costs, provide financial guarantees to protect existing customers, and commit to providing up to 1 gigawatt of flexible demand response.
