Last Wednesday's deadly floods, caused by a collapsed glacier, severely damaged 12 hydropower plants in the Trishuli River basin, knocking out more than 10% of Nepal's total power generation capacity. The state-owned Nepal Electricity Authority, which owns six of the damaged facilities, confirmed that supply remains adequate but acknowledged the need to rethink hydropower policy as climate-related disasters become more frequent. Experts suggest diversifying energy sources beyond hydropower, which currently accounts for nearly 100% of Nepal's electricity.
