Kenya's Trade Minister, Lee Kinyanjui, has warned foreign nationals that visa-free entry does not grant the right to work, stating that the government will shut down unlicensed small businesses operated by foreigners. President William Ruto had set today, September 7, as the deadline for foreigners to cease small-scale operations. This follows reports that the Burundian embassy would provide emergency travel documents for citizens wishing to return home due due to alleged mistreatment of Burundians. The Kenyan Ministry of Trade stated that some visitors "deliberately abuse visa applications," entering as investors or tourists but then engaging in commercial activities, thereby violating their declared status. Burundian Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana posted on X, warning that if hate speech against Burundi continues, the situation will change, and emphasized that the Kenyan government is responsible for the lives of Burundians in Kenya. Kenyan Foreign Ministry officials clarified on Sunday that foreigners holding the necessary documents, including work permits and licenses, may continue their activities.
