Commodities guru Jeff Currie: U.S. Treasury's "financial repression" is leading markets back to a "hard asset" era, $10,000 gold is not a pipe dream.
In a podcast interview on September 7, Jeff Currie, former Head of Commodities Research at Goldman Sachs, warned that as U.S. debt interest soars to $1.1 trillion (projected to reach $1.5 trillion) and "financial repression" intensifies, global capital is fleeing traditional financial assets and shifting towards "hard assets" such such as gold, energy, and agriculture. He believes the world is in the early stages of a multi-decade "hard asset supercycle," noting that the U.S. Treasury is intervening in long-term government bond yields through measures like bond buybacks, aiming to lower yields at the cost of triggering inflation and eroding the real value of debt. Currie emphasized that against a backdrop of sovereign currency devaluation and sanctions, gold's traditional negative correlation with interest rates has decoupled. If gold's proportion of foreign exchange reserves were to return to pre-1971 gold standard levels, there would be significant upside potential, making a $10,000 gold forecast not an empty talk. He also favors energy and agriculture, pointing out that energy giants' free cash flow yields are significantly higher than those of tech giants, and that Western societies suffer from an "illusion of abundance," underestimating the risk of a global economic recession and the hard constraints on energy supply. Currie expects corporate bond yields to fall below sovereign bond yields in the future, and investors should broadly hold hard asset indices.
