The Tarrant County District Attorney's Office in Texas announced the bust of a $250 million gold scam targeting over 200 elderly individuals, with more than 40 people indicted so far. The scam ring tricked victims into withdrawing their savings to purchase gold, Bitcoin, or cash, which was then collected by couriers. The gold was transported to a refinery in Florida to be melted down, while the cash and gold were converted into cryptocurrency and transferred out of the country.
On September 3, Muzamil Ahmed, 35, one of the key figures in the case, was arrested at New York's JFK International Airport. He faces charges of financial abuse of the elderly, money laundering, and engaging in organized criminal activity. Investigators have seized over $130 million in gold related to the scheme.
