NYU Mathematician Accuses OpenAI of "Fighting Dirty" on Million-Dollar Navier-Stokes Problem
NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster announced three proofs on Tuesday for one of the major unsolved problems in theoretical mathematics, the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, which carries a $1 million bounty. Buckmaster alleges that OpenAI obtained information about his team's progress, then leveraged its superior computing resources to rush a formal proof, and later asked him to remove his collaborator Levent Alpöge's credit. OpenAI's head of mathematical research, Sebastian Bubeck, has denied the claims as "false and inflammatory."
