According to The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced his departure on Tuesday (September 8), citing his unwillingness to participate in an industry race that he believes will lead to out-of-control AI systems. He warned that the situation could become "uncontrollable" as early as the end of next year. On the same day, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki published a lengthy article calling for global coordination to slow down the industry and seeking government intervention. OpenAI also announced that an AI automation researcher has officially "joined" and disclosed core data on Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI), marking the entry of AI autonomous iteration research into a substantive phase. Coxon, Pachocki, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have jointly signed a statement with over a thousand AI researchers, calling for global governments to coordinate the establishment of mechanisms to "hit the brakes" on self-improving AI models when necessary.
