According to data from South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC), the preliminary household loan balance across all financial sectors in South Korea increased by KRW 2.6 trillion in August 2026, a slower pace compared to the KRW 6.4 trillion increase in the previous month. Within this, housing mortgage loans rose by KRW 4.3 trillion, showing an accelerated growth rate, while other types of loans decreased by KRW 1.7 trillion. Credit loans specifically fell by KRW 0.5 trillion, marking their first decline in four months. The FSC assessed that the increase in housing transactions drove the growth in mortgage loan balances, but the decline in other loans slowed the overall growth rate. The FSC stated that the pace of mortgage loan growth might accelerate in the future due to seasonal demand and new housing finance measures. Financial authorities and institutions need to continue close monitoring and strict management of household loan growth.
